February 11, 2018 Newsletter... OMG a Cougar

Published by: janean strong on 02-11-2018

We had a lovely winter break of warmer temps for a while…. such a relief.
Our snow was so piled up that a huge cougar was able to jump the fence and decimated over half my flock of chickens and ducks. So distressing, especially when you raise a lot of them by hand. I have to say I did not handle it well… and pretty much lost it. Really, I didn’t know I could scream so loud!
I ended up with 7 inside (see pic of the cages in our family area). So far only one has died. It takes a lot of patience to tend to gaping wounds, give penicillin shots and sit patiently trying to get uninterested animals to drink electrolytes and eat protein. But I have to say the reward is that most of them are doing well and healing. Wounds look good. The ones still inside are unsteady, I assume from their muscle tears. One couldn't raise her head and just laid in one spot with her head on the ground. She is now walking around with her head up!!!

The girls are hanging out while I clean their cages

It amazes me how fast big cats kill. They just go through the flock and kill as many as they can and then take one to eat. My question? Why can’t they just grab one and leave with it???
I understand that because we have had so much snow there isn’t enough out in the forests for them to eat. They don’t really want to come around humans.
It is too late for the ones that are gone but the necessary precautions have been taken and the last time the cougar visited I watched him try to jump up to the roof to get in the little opening (It was immediately boarded up after the last fiasco). He tried 3 times, hanging on the fencing. I watched holding my breath but he couldn't figure out how to get in and sauntered away.
